Romans 11

The “Jews” are NOT God’s “Chosen People!”

Certainly one of the most IMPORTANT – and probably the most MISINTERPRETED – of all the chapters in the entire Bible.

 By Lorraine Day, M.D.

Before we begin the study of Romans, Chapter 11, we must define the terms found herein.

We must interpret the Bible, both the Old and the New Testament through Jesus Christ – NOT through “Israel.”  Jesus, Himself, said that the Old Testament is about HIM!  As Jesus said to the Pharisees when He was on earth, at a time when the ONLY Scriptures that were available were the Old Testament Scriptures.  (The New Testament had not yet been written.):

“You search the Scriptures, thinking that in them you have eternal life, but they (the Old Testament Scriptures) are they which testify OF ME!”
John 5:39

The Evangelical Christians, virtually all of whom are “dispensationalists” – meaning that they believe that the present-day “Jews” are God’s “Chosen People,” use THIS chapter, Romans, Chapter 11, (the MIStranslation thereof) as major support for their False Doctrine!

This dangerous False Doctrine has been developed by a mistranslation of various parts of the Bible, particularly Romans 11, because of a total lack of understanding of Revelation knowledge vs. Sense knowledge.

“Sense knowledge” is based on information that can be obtained through our five senses; sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell.

On the other hand, “Revelation knowledge” is NOT obtained through the five senses.  It can ONLY be obtained through a close personal relationship with Jesus Christ, after one has been truly “born again” and received God’s breath of holiness (incorrectly referred to as the “Holy Spirit”) which has absolutely nothing to do with the blasphemous, anti-Christ, “tongue-speaking” movement that is sweeping Christendom.  (For the difference between “sense knowledge” and “revelation knowledge” see the book “Two Kinds of Faith” by E. W. Kenyon, available at www.goodnewsaboutgod.com)

The Evangelical Christian movement, as well as many other fundamentalist denominations, interpret much of the New Testament via “sense knowledge” rather than “revelation knowledge”, leading to many False Doctrines.

We will see in this Chapter, Chapter 11 of Romans, that:

1)   the word “Jew” is nowhere to be found.

2)    The word “Israelite” is NOT synonymous with the word “Jew.”

3)    The word “Israelite” does NOT refer to an ethnicity, or bloodline, but it refers to a person who BELIEVES in the one true God – a Believer.

4)    The word “Gentile” does NOT refer to an ethnicity, or bloodline, it refers to a person who does NOT believe in the one true God – an Unbeliever.

5)    Paul refers to “Gentiles” – Unbelievers – as his “brethren.”

In addition, we will learn that Paul was NOT a Jew.  He WAS an Israelite, a Believer in the one true God – but he was NOT a Jew.

In fact, the word “Jew” NEVER appears in the Bible – it is a mistranslation of the word “Judean” which refers to a geographic location – the area of Judea – or to an individual’s belief in the one true God – the same meaning as the word “Israelite.”

The Bible translators have taken reprehensible license with their translation of God’s word.  They have translated the Bible according to their preconceived theological beliefs – their FALSE doctrines – rather than the way it was written in the original Greek and Hebrew, as inspired by God.  They have CHANGED the Word of God!

A. Please note that nowhere in the chapter are the words “Jew” or “Jews” used.  In verse 1, the word “Israelite” is used, but this is NOT synonymous with the word “Jew.”

B. Throughout this chapter, in the King James Version, the word “Gentiles” is often used.  There is no such word in the Original Greek.  Instead, the word is “nations” which means Unbelievers (in the true God – pagans who worshiped many gods), versus “Israel” which refers to the Believers in the true God.

The words “pagans,” “Gentiles” and “nations” are ALL the same word in Strong’s Concordance.

The words “Israelite” and “Nations” do NOT refer to a specific ethnicity.  They refer to the distinction between those who DID – or DO - believe in the true God of heaven and those who DID (or DO) NOT!

C. In the book of Romans, Paul is speaking to non-Israelites, those who don’t know God – the nations, or Unbelievers (Unbelievers - until Paul brings them the message of the gospel).  In verse 25, Paul calls them “brethren.”  They, indeed, have become “brethren” – or brothers – to Paul, because they have accepted the message of Jesus Christ.

Jesus, Himself, referred to those who believed on Him as “My mother and My brothers” in Matthew 12:48,49

D. NO ONE is saved by his or her “ethnicity.”  Jesus was very clear on that point!

“There is neither Jew nor Greek”  (Galatians 3:28; Colossians 3:11).

“God is no respecter of persons.”  (Acts 10:34)

“One must Believe in order to be saved.”  (Acts 16:31)

E.    The “seed” of Abraham is Christ – and His followers.

“Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith NOT, “And to seeds, as of many; but as of ONE, ‘And to thy SEED, which is Christ.”  Galatians 3:16

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor freeman, there is neither male nor female:  for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  And if ye be Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.  Galatians 3:28,29

Abraham is NOT the father of the “Jews.”  Abraham is the father of the “BELIEVERS in Jesus Christ!”

The BELIEVERS in Jesus Christ ARE “Israel!”

Now, let us begin the study of Romans, Chapter 11.

1 I say then, Has God cast away His people?  God forbid.  For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.

Who are God’s people?  All who truly Believe in Him.

An Israelite is one who believes as “Israel” (Jacob – after his name was changed) did.  Remember that Jacob’s name was changed to “Israel” after he had stopped his life of deception and had become a Believer in, and follower of, the true God. God changed Jacob’s NAME, NOT Jacob’s ethnicity.  The offspring of Jacob (now re-named “Israel”) and those who believed as Jacob did (now also referred to as “Israel”), were called Israel-ites.  This term is in NO way synonymous with the word “Jew” – a word that does NOT appear in the Bible, in the original Greek or Hebrew scriptures.

The seed of Abraham is well-defined by God in the Bible.  The “seed” of Abraham is Christ, and the follower of Christ.  The “seed” of Abraham does NOT refer to “Jews.”  Remember that Abraham was NOT a “Jew.”  Both Abraham and Sarah were Babylonians – they came from Ur of the Chaldees in Babylon.

2 God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew.  Have you not perceived what the Scripture said of Elijah?  How he says as he is pleading with God against Israel, saying

Again, God’s “people” are those who Believe in Him, regardless of their ethnicity.

3 “Lord, they have killed Your prophets, and digged down Your altars; and I am left alone, and they seek my life.”

Even the “Israel” of old, who claimed to worship the true God, had wandered so far from God that they killed God’s prophets and tore down the altars where offerings were made to God.

Elijah is bemoaning the fact, that these “Israelites,” these supposed worshipers of the true God, were actually seeking Elijah, a TRUE follower of God, to kill him.

This is exactly what will happen in the last days, now approaching.  The members of the Organized Church, those who claim to be (but are NOT) followers of the true God, will join with the present-day group that refer to themselves as “Jews” – those who hate Christ - and Christians – and will call for the murder of the true followers of Christ.

4 But what was the answer God said unto him?  “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.”

Elijah was feeling very alone, as though he was the only true follower of God left in Israel.  But God confirmed that God always has His remnant.

5 Even so than at this present time also, there is a remnant according to the election of grace.

What does it mean to have a “remnant according to the election of grace”?  “Grace” is often defined by theologians as unmerited favor – as though God is going to give you something you don’t deserve – and you should be eternally grateful.  But that is a very inadequate explanation.  It suggests that God is disgusted with humanity, but He’s going to do us a big favor and save “some of us” – because He is God.

That definition completely misses the point – and the character - of God!

“Grace” means that God has a Plan, a marvelous Plan, that includes everyone who has ever lived.  “Grace” means that no matter how evil ANY being has ever been, that God has the ability - and the will – to save EVERYONE of them FROM their sins.  He will do so by allowing them to reap everything they have sown, and thereby understand where their decisions have led them.

When they finally reap what they have sown, they will sufficiently understand that they are incapable of running their own life.  They will then turn to Christ and ask Him to be their Problem-solver, Plan-maker, and Saviour.

When He puts His Spirit, His disposition in them, by their studying the word and praying fervently to Him, they will then understand that their salvation has all been of Christ – and it has been in no way “of them.”  THIS is “grace!” - - - Jesus does it ALL!

6 And if by grace, then it is not of works; otherwise grace is no more grace.  But if it is of works, then it is no more grace; otherwise work, is no more work.

Salvation is ALL of God – it is of grace alone and NOT of works.  We cannot even make a “decision” for Christ UNLESS He puts in our heart the desire to do so.  If He puts in US the desire to do so, then He will eventually put that same desire into everyone who has ever lived – because ‘God is NO respecter of persons.”  (Acts 10:34).  “There is neither Jew nor Greek.” (Gal. 3:28; Col 3:11))

7 What then?  Israel has not obtained that for which she seeks; but the elect have obtained it, and the rest were calloused (hardened).

“Israel” – those who claimed then, and claim now to be the true followers of God – wandered so far from God that their hearts became callous, so calloused that when they saw Christ, the said He had a devil!  And they eventually murdered Him!

NO ONE can make a “decision” for Christ on his own.  NO ONE can make  “decision” for Christ – unless – God puts it “in him” to make that decision.  It is ALL of God.

The same thing is happening with the Organized Church of today when they come in contact with a true follower of Christ – one who believes that God is NOT a killer God (the doctrine of Jesus), and that there is no literal burning hell (again, the doctrine of Jesus).

8 According as it is written, God has given them the spirit of stupor, eyes that they should NOT see, and ears that they should NOT hear, unto this day.

“Because they rejected truth, God will bring on them a STRONG DELUSION, so they will believe a lie.”  (2 Thess 2: 10,11)

Only when one has the Spirit (breath – disposition) of Jesus Christ inside himself,  only when one knows Christ personally – not just knows “about Christ” - will a person be able to truly understand TRUTH.

9 And David said, Let their table be made a snare and a trap, and a stumblingblock and repayment to them;

Jesus Christ is the “stumblingblock.”  “The stone which the builders rejected, the same has become the Chief Corner Stone.  Whosoever shall fall upon that stone shall be broken; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.”  Luke 20:17

10 Let their eyes be darkened, that that may NOT see, and bow their backs bow down continually.

11 I say then, Have they stumbled that they should be falling?  God forbid; but instead, through their failure salvation has come unto the unbelievers (nations), to provoke them to jealousy.

The book of Acts is full of jealousy of the “Jews” whenever they would see the nations (Gentiles – Unbelievers) receiving God’s gifts.

12 Now if their offense is the world’s riches and their discomfiture the unbelievers (nations) riches, how much rather that which fills them!

God ALWAYS brings good out of bad.  Even though the present-day supposed believers in God have gone FAR into apostasy, in the last eon, after they reap what they have sown, eventually they will learn to do right, confess their sins, be converted and be saved.

Indeed, even the present-day “Jews” who hate Christ, who officially (according to their culture and their holiest book – the Talmud) hate Christians and are taught that “even the best of the ‘Gentiles’ should be killed, will ALL reap what they have sown (most of them will go through this in the LAST eon), and eventually turn to Jesus Christ for salvation.

13 For I speak to you Unbelievers (“Gentiles” – NON-Israelites), inasmuch as I am an apostle of the Unbelievers (nations – “Gentiles”), I am glorifying my office,

14 If by any means I may provoke those of my flesh to jealousy and might save some of them.

15 For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world,

The Israelites (NOT “Jews”) had been given the most information about how to live, how to treat their fellow man, how to relate to God, as well as information on the coming Messiah – Jesus Christ, but they had rejected almost all of it, so their information was “taken away” from them and given to those who were interested in following Christ.

In the parable of the vineyard, in Luke 20:9-16, Jesus told the Pharisees:

“So they (husbandmen - the tenant farmers) cast him (the son) out of the vineyard, and killed Him.  What therefore shall the lord (owner) of the vineyard do unto them?

Jesus continues, “He shall come and destroy these tenant farmers, and SHALL GIVE THE VINEYARD TO OTHERS.” Luke 20:15,16

15 (cont.)what shall the taking back of them be, but life from the dead?

But since Jesus is NOT a “Killer God” and says clearly throughout the Bible that “He came to SEEK and to SAVE the LOST” eventually ALL will be saved, but ONLY after reaping EVERYTHING that they have sown!

16 For if the firstfruit is holy, the lump is also holy: and if the root is holy, so are the branches.

The “firstfruit” are those who will be saved when Jesus comes.  The “lump” – all the rest of humanity – will be saved during the Last Eon.  (See “Does “Forever” Really Mean Forever?”)

17 And if some of the branches are broken off, and you (the former “Unbelievers – those who were NOT Israelites), being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them partake of the root and fatness of the olive tree:

“It is a remarkable fact, generally unknown, that a very old olive tree, no longer capable of bearing, may be rejuvenated by a wild graft.”  Concordant Commentary p 241.

18 Boast not against the branches.  But if you boast, you do not bear the root, but the root bears you.

Paul is telling them that if they boast about being saved, when many Israelites are NOT saved, they are taking credit for something they should not.  Christ, the root, bears ALL.  Not the other way around.  It is ALL of Christ – and NONE of us – that brings salvation.

19 You will say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be grafted in.

20 Well:  because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith.  Don’t be haughty, but fear:

Again, a warning by Paul to be humble and thankful that God is going to save everyone.  If they, the former Unbelievers – the NON-Israelites – become haughty, they too can be lost (at least, temporarily) just as the Israelites - and today’s apostate Christians – the Organized Churches.

21 For if God did not spare the natural branches, neither will he spare you.

Some of the natural branches had been “cut off” because they did not bear fruit.  The same can happen to the branches “grafted in.”

22 Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God:  on those, indeed, who are falling – severity: yet on you, God’s goodness, if you should be persisting in the goodness: or else you will also be hewn out.

God has VERY high standards.  He’s going to make every person PERFECT – and ready for heaven or the new earth.  That requires, on God’s part, “goodness – AND – severity.”

“You SHALL be Perfect.”  (Matt 5:48 – literal translation)

23 And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.

God is willing – able – and WILL – save ALL mankind.

“GOD is the SAVIOR of ALL mankind!”  (1 Tim 4:10)

24 For if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and you were grafted in contrary to nature into a good olive tree: how much more shall these, which are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?

25 For I am not willing for you to be ignorant of this secret, brethren, lest you may be passing for prudent among yourselves, that callousness in part on Israel has come, until the complement (“fullness” in the KJV) of the unbelievers (nations – “Gentiles”) may be entering.

This phrase, “until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in” as it appears in the King James Version (KJV), is responsible for the development and teaching of serious false doctrines in the Christian Church, particularly by the Evangelical Christians.  The incorrect interpretation of this phrase, in part, is the genesis of the false doctrine of “dispensationalism” – as though there was to be a ruling period for “Gentiles” (supposedly NON-Jews), followed by a ruling period for Jews – over the “Gentiles,” purportedly during the millennium.

First of all, the Evangelical Christians do not understand the Spiritual nature of the New Testament.  They interpret everything according to their senses – what they can perceive with their eyes, ears, taste, touch, etc.  That is called “Sense-knowledge.”  Whereas the Bible, particularly the New Testament must be interpreted with “Revelation knowledge,” the discernment given by God to those who know Jesus Christ personally, those who understand the Biblical interpretation principle given by Paul AND by Jesus Christ Himself, that principle being:

The “First” is Physical and the Second is always “Spiritual.”  (See John, Chapter 3 “First birth” – “Second Birth” and 1 Corinthians 15:44-49)  The Literal interpretation of things Spiritual leads down a darkened path of incorrect theology.

26   And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written,

ALL Israel WILL be saved!  That is true!  But just WHO is “Israel”?  As we have studied, “Israel” is the Spiritual name given to Jacob, AFTER Jacob gave up his life of deceit and fraud and finally became upright and God-fearing.  He became “one” with God and man.  He learned to know God and live a righteous life.

The offspring of Jacob, who subsequently were known as “Israel”, now also became known as “Israel” or “Israelites.”  But their genes did NOT change.  They did NOT become a particular ethnicity.  They did NOT become “Jews”!  The name “Israel” is a Spiritual name.  It denotes a change in the HEART – NOT a change in the “genes!”

“There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob:”  Romans 11:26

The “Deliverer out of Zion” is God in the form of Jesus Christ, Who, indeed, “took away the ungodliness from Jacob.”

27   For this is My covenant unto them, when I shall be taking away their sins

God will eventually “take away” the sins from EVERYONE, then they will ALL be referred to as “Israel” because they will ALL be “one with God and man” and God will save them ALL.  This is the TRUE doctrine of Universal Restoration.

28   As concerning the gospel, they are enemies because of you, yet, as to election, they are beloved for the fathers.

The Pharisees of that day, the group commonly referred to as the “Jews” of the time of Jesus, hated the Non-Jews, disdainfully referred to them as “Gentiles” meaning cattle.  They refused to even entertain the idea that non-Jews were – and are – loved by God.

But God is in charge.  He runs the world, and His Plan is to save EVERYONE!

29   For the gifts and calling of God are irrevocable.

God’s Plan of Universal Restoration is IRREVOCABLE!   EVERYONE will be saved, eventually.  (See “What Happens at the Judgment?”)

30   For as you, in times past, were stubborn toward God, yet you have now been shown mercy at their stubbornness (unbelief),

Jesus came “to seek and to save that which was LOST.”  (Luke 19:10)  Everyone has been “lost” (unbelieving or stubborn) at some point in his or her life.  But Jesus came to save them ALL.

31   Even now have these also been stubborn (unbelieving), that now they also may be shown mercy.

32   For God locks up ALL together in stubbornness (unbelief), that He should be merciful to ALL:

It is God, Himself, who clearly takes responsibility for “locking ALL up in unbelief.”  God is the one who “subjected the world to vanity (sin) – NOT willingly, but by Him who subjects it . . .” (Romans 8:20)

But through the stubborn unbelief of every individual will come the pain and suffering of wrong decisions.  This is “the reaping what one has sown.”  It is through this “reaping” that the sinner, the one who is “lost”, will begin to understand that he needs God to run his life.  God, indeed, will show loving

kindness (mercy) to ALL as He draws them to Himself for ultimate salvation – of ALL mankind.  (See “Why Did God Create Human Beings Into a Universe Already Heavily Contaminated With Sin?”)

33   O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God.  How inscrutable are His judgments, and untraceable His ways.

God’s Plan of Salvation for ALL mankind (Universal Restoration), by plunging humanity into sin, allowing them to reap what they have sown and thereby redeeming them, is truly an inscrutable Plan.  When a person sins, it is THAT sin that leads to consequences - that leads to reaping what one has sown – that ultimately leads to recognizing one’s need for God in his or her life – that eventually will lead to Salvation.  So Salvation is the ultimate consequence of Sin.  “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God.”

“God’s judgments and ways are too deep for human perception, but we can grasp His purpose.  We do not know how fruit is made, but we can plant a tree and enjoy its product.  We can grasp God’s goal, but the process by which He attains it is too complex for our feeble minds.”  Concordant Commentary p 242

God doesn’t “punish” people for sinning.  The sin itself will invariably lead to the consequences that are wrapped into the initial “sin.”  The person ends up “punishing” himself.

34   For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His advisor?

No human being could ever come up with such an amazing Plan.

35   Or who gives to Him first, and it will be repaid him?

36   Seeing that out of Him, and through Him, and for Him are ALL things: to Him be glory for the eons!  Amen!

“This is the most comprehensive statement that can be uttered.  God is the source of all, the channel of all, and the object of all.  The universe sprang out of Him, it has its course in Him, and He will be its ultimate! . . . Creation is out of God, not out of nothing.  This explains universal history.  God is the One back of all the movements of mankind.  This reveals the goal of all things.  God is so guiding all His creatures that eventually, He will become their ALL.  To Him, indeed, be glory for the eons!”  Ibid, p 242

God is in charge of the Universe.  God is omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent.  God CAN – and WILL – save EVERYONE who He has created – since the beginning of this world.

“the Lord is NOT willing that ANY should perish, but that ALL should come to repentance.  (2 Peter 3:9)

It is “God’s WILL” that NONE should be lost (perish), but that ALL should come to repentance!

THIS is Universal Restoration!
